HELEN TWIST LES NEWMAN AWARD 2025

One of the greatest honours within Comdance is the Les Newman Award. This national award recognises extraordinary and enduring contributions to our Society. It isn’t presented every year — only when someone truly reflects the spirit of commitment, service, and excellence that it represents.

The 2025 recipient of the Les Newman Award is Helen Twist.

Helen has served as the Queensland Organiser since 1997 — an incredible 28 years of dedication. Over that time, she has built strong, trusting relationships with teachers across the state. Everyone knows Helen will always go above and beyond — whether that’s finding suitable exam dates, sorting out tricky timetables, or simply offering a kind word when it’s most needed.

Her warmth, approachability, and professionalism make her not only an exceptional organiser, but a mentor and friend to so many. Teachers often turn to Helen not just for studio matters, but for personal support and advice too. Her understanding of the challenges and rewards of teaching dance has made her a deeply respected and much-loved figure in our community.

Since 2021, Helen has also taken on the role of New South Wales Organiser — juggling two states with her trademark patience, efficiency, and grace. On top of that, she continues to support teacher training courses across Queensland, ensuring every participant feels welcomed and valued, no matter how many last-minute changes appear on the list!

Helen is also a proud ambassador for Comdance at national events such as the Australian Dance Teachers Expo, where her enthusiasm and energy have helped showcase the best of who we are.

In the hardest of times Helen stands up. She is always available and the dancers ethos of ‘the show must go on’. Helen’s tireless dedication, grace under pressure, and genuine care for others reflect everything this award stands for.
